The Next Big Fire

Would anyone be surprised if B.C.I. is suddenly and mysteriously destroyed by fire in the next little while so that it can't be rebuilt on Brant Ave.?

Fools Onboard

The major league thinkers on The Grand Erie District School Board are not just attempting to look a gift horse in the mouth, they are also trying to spit in its face. The Provincial Government has come up with $23.8 million dollars to rebuild B.C.I. on Brant Ave. but of course the School Board is horrified at this prospect and is trying every argument possible to discredit this windfall and make every excuse why it won't work. The agenda of these rustic pinocchios has been clear since after the last election. Before that election they were in favour of the rebuild but right after they reversed their course. They only supported the rebuild so that they would not have to deal with an angry Brantford public during their election campaigns and face possible defeat. But in doing so they also have no mandate or public support for relocating a new B.C. I. anywhere else in the city or the county. And of course somewhere in their rural fiefdom would be their preferred location, maybe Harley, or La Salette or Teeterville. The site that they chose is on the farthest southwest edge of Brantford and would be more convenient to those in the rural areas than any city students so that should tell you something right there.

And if these trustees are finally forced to comply to the wishes of the majority, as trustee Werden has indicated they will use their petty power and spite the B.C. I. supporters by ripping down the original facade. How mature. And what an example this sets for the students.

It was good of Dave Levac and others to work hard and secure this funding. Now he needs to work just as hard to see that this board is removed from power like the Toronto board was a few years ago for financial mismanagement, because if the trustees turn down this funding as they have indicated is their want, they will be sticking the tax payers of Brantford with an onerous expense that is unnecessary. Amalgamation of boards might have been a good thing in some cases but here it has given these hicks from the sticks the power over this urban school system and they seem anxious to destroy it. They should take their small town thinking and go back to running small town schools.

The Seediest

If the Brantford City Council is really determined to rid the downtown of "seedy" enterprises, where are they going to relocate the City Hall?

Stripped Of Your Money

The Burghers of Brantford in their infinite wisdom, got on their high moral horse (selective though it may be) and decided to rid Downtown Brantford of the scourge of a strip club. To do so, they bought the building that formerly housed "Moody's" and at a substantial premium to boot. This is supposed to rid the downtown of this den of iniquity and all the attendant perverted behavior that accompanies women removing their clothes for money. The City Council seems to conveniently overlook the fact that this club has not been in operation in over two years and a lot of unsavory stuff has been taking place in the downtown during this time despite the absence of the strippers. And even when this club was in operation there was far less police involvement at it than there is at the nearby Casino. Ah, but then the Casino provides lots of money to the city coffers while a strip club provides far less. Overlooked also is the fact that not that many years ago, gambling was considered and sin and a crime until the government saw what a cash cow it could be and got involved. Instead of organized crime controlling the numbers game, the Provincial Government now does. Maybe the government will become involve in the sex trade too and strip clubs will then receive the blessing of Council as well.

But rest easy dear citizens of Brantford the little angels that attend Laurier University will not have to put up with loud music, drunken behavior, pucking and urinating in the streets from patrons of a strip bar. They will be free to do this themselves. Just ask the neighbours in the Westdale area of Hamilton how well behaved university students are.

And while the rest of us struggle to clear snow from sidewalks and driveways because the city has no money for new technology that would alleviate these problems and as you pass your local crack house know that the downtown is now a safer place thanks to our self-righteous City Council. Because when it comes to Downtown spending the sky's the limit, just like your property tax increases.
